Israeli air strikes killed two people and wounded five others in southern Lebanon on Thursday, Lebanese military sources said, as cross-border tensions escalated between the Jewish state and the Iranian-backed Hezbollah group. The sources, who requested anonymity, said an elderly couple were killed and five civilians injured when Israeli jets bombed the town of Seddiqine in the Tyre district, destroying eight houses and five cars and damaging 22 other homes. Civil defense and health workers rushed to the scene to clear the rubble and take the casualties to a nearby hospital, official sources told Xinhua. Hezbollah said its fighters had attacked Israeli troops near the border early on Thursday, targeting several sites with rockets and missiles. The Lebanon-Israel border has been witnessing increased tension since Oct. 8, 2023, after Lebanese armed group Hezbollah fired dozens of rockets toward Israel in support of the Hamas attack on Israel the previous day, prompting Israel to respond by firing heavy artillery toward southeastern Lebanon. The confrontations between Hezbollah and Israel have killed 322 people on the Lebanese side, including 216 Hezbollah members and 61 civilians, according to Lebanese security sources.
