A leftover mine from the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s has exploded in the southwestern Iranian province of Khuzestan, killing one person and injuring three others, local media reported.

The incident occurred on February 28 in the city of Bostan, according to the official IRNA news agency.

The spokesperson for the Khuzestan Emergency Department, Aref Sharahani, described the dead person as a 19-year-old teenage boy.

Those injured included a 57-year-old woman and two boys aged 10 and 12. They were transported to hospital by ambulance.

The explosion highlights the risk posed by unexploded landmines left over from the Iran-Iraq conflict, which raged from 1980 to 1988.
