IED Explosion in Gubio Claims Lives of Almajiri Six Quranic school pupils, known as Almajirai, met a tragic end in Gubio Town, Borno, as an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated, according to reports from Zagazola. The incident occurred on Saturday, January 27, when a metal scavenger inadvertently collected various metallic items, including an abandoned undetonated IED, in a building close to a Tsangaya school. The explosion, which took place around 2 pm, resulted in the death of the children and caused severe injuries. Metal scavenging had been prohibited in Borno State by Governor Babagana Zulum since July 2023, following reports of vandalism of government facilities in abandoned communities. Governor Zulum highlighted the dangers faced by scavengers who ventured into deserted areas, often falling victim to insurgent attacks. Despite the ban, metal scavengers continued their activities unabated, leading to this tragic loss of life, which could have been prevented.
