Live: Newquay beach sealed off after public report 'unexploded bomb'
HM Coastguard has sectioned off an area of Tolcarne Beach
A section of beach in Cornwall is cordoned off while reports of an unexploded bomb are investigated. An area of Tolcarne Beach at Newquay has been sealed off by HM Coastguard today (Sunday, January 28).
A member of the public is understood to have alerted coastguard this morning about the presence of an ordnance, possibly an unexploded wartime bomb. It is understood the Royal Navy bomb disposal team from Plymouth is on its way to the beach.
CornwallLive reporter Olivier Vergnault says an area measuring about 100m square is currently cordoned off from the public.
Not a bomb
A spokesman for the EOD unit has confirmed the following: "The bomb disposal team has assessed the item and it is not ordnance - just a piece of scrap metal."
He said sometimes metal objects that resemble explosives do wash ashore. He thanked the public for reporting the find.
