On 20 October 2023, the Nigerien air force conducted airstrikes against a large gathering of civilians and IS Sahel militants after Friday prayer in the village of Tabankort (Menaka, Menaka). People had gathered to witness the execution of sentences against two persons accused of theft and rape in a self-styled IS Sahel sharia court. 167 people, including 33 individuals identified as members of the Dawsahak community were killed in the airstrike.
