On 2 January 2024, in Kawlin town (Kawlin township, Kawlin district, Sagaing region), the Myanmar military based in Wuntho town fired six artillery rounds into the town starting from around 9 am without an armed clash occurring. One of the shells struck a market located in the eastern part of the town. According to the RFA, Myanmar Now, Kachin News Group and Shwe Phee Myay News Agency, six locals were killed. Meanwhile, the VOA reported that at least eight were killed, while Myanmar Pressphoto Agency and Khit Thit Media reported that five were killed and four injured. Fatalities coded as 5 using the lowest estimates.
