Mortar Bomb
Mortar Bomb event in Illinois, Bloomington area, United States of America on Sun 24th December 2023
24th December 2023
A Springfield-commanded bomb squad was dispatched Saturday to Bloomington after an unexploded ordnance was found downtown.
Bloomington Police Department Spokesman Ofc. Bryce Janssen said at 12:43 p.m. Saturday, police were called to the 400 block of East Washington Street, where a person had located a possibly unexploded ordnance on the ground.
Janssen said the Illinois Secretary of State Police Hazardous Device Unit was then called to the scene. A Pantagraph reporter observed part of a parking lot south of that block of Washington Street was cordoned off that afternoon by yellow police tape.
Janssen said they suspected it was a World War II-era .50 caliber mortar from Japan, but it's unclear whether the Hazardous Device Unit was able to confirm the exact origin of the ordnance.
He said investigators determined that the ordnance was inert and not a threat to public safety.
No one was injured and no arrests have been made.
