On 27 November 2023, in An Hpa Lay village of Kawkareik township (Kawkareik district, Kayin state), four rounds of 120mm heavy artillery shells fired by the Myanmar military troops landed in a monastery compound at around 5:30 pm, hitting and destroying monastery buildings and water pots. The shelling injured two junior monks, aged 16 and 14.
