Mine event in Khab Washaaf area, Yemen on Thu 30th November 2023
30th November 2023
Two children were killed and five others injured in the explosion of a warhead remnant in Yemen's northeast province of Al-Jawf, Houthi-run al-Masirah TV reported on Thursday.
The incident occurred on Wednesday evening when the children found the remnant during their play outdoors and brought it into the house in the Al-Yatma area of the Khub Washaaf district, in the northeastern part of the province. The remnant exploded then and killed the two children.
The Al-Yatma area is a few miles away from the frontline between the government troops and the Houthi rebels, but fighting has been largely eased for more than a year.
According to recent reports by UN aid agencies, landmines and unexploded ordnance have been the biggest killers of children in Yemen. The uptick in deaths from these weapons could be the result of families moving to previously inaccessible areas following the decrease in hostilities, said the reports.
In April, the Yemeni government made an urgent appeal for international assistance to clear landmines and other explosive remnants of war.
Yemen has been mired in a civil war since late 2014 when the Houthi militia took control of several northern provinces and forced the government out of the capital Sanaa.
