On 15 October 2023, an IED planted by unidentified assailants detonated in the vehicle that the Misamis Occidental governor was in, in Barangay Lapasan (Clarin, Misamis Occidental, Northern Mindanao). The governor was in a car following a police pickup in a convoy of 4 vehicles. Authorities said that the governor and his 2 police escorts were unhurt; however, the vehicle's driver-side window was shattered, and the door had bullet holes. The governor was also attacked in December 2021, resulting in him being wounded and the death of a vice gubernatorial candidate.
