Police and bomb disposal teams were called out to the St James Road area of Gateshead on Wednesday afternoon Bomb disposal teams descended on Gateshead after a suspected unexploded device was discovered on a Gateshead building site. Pictures taken last night show police cars blocking St James Street, near Gateshead Stadium Metro Station. Police had been called out earlier that afternoon to the construction site after a device, believed to be an unexploded ordnance, was discovered. A cordon was set up and the device was safely removed. The bridge crossing the Tyne and Wear Metro lines was opened to pedestrians only first, with Nexus confirming that its services had not been affected by the incident. A statement from Northumbria Police said: "Shortly after 3.30pm yesterday (Wednesday) we received a report that a suspected unexploded device had been discovered at a construction site in the St James Square area of Gateshead. "A cordon was set up as a precaution and officers were assisted by bomb disposal experts, who safely removed the device. We would like to thank everyone for their cooperation and patience throughout the incident."
