On 21 September 2023, in Chaung Wa village of Kawthoung township (Kawthoung district, Tanintharyi region), the Myanmar military fired artillery rounds indiscriminately into the village at around 10 am. A 60-year-old man who was working in his garden was killed by an artillery shell. Over 170 villagers were forced to flee to Thailand.
