On 13 September 2023, JNIM militants fired at least three mortar shells at Timbuktu Airport (harboring FAMa, Wagner, and MINUSMA forces) in Timbuktu (Tombouctou, Tombouctou). FAMa confirmed the attack and said that it did not cause any damages. Photographs seen circulating on local social media showed the remains of 107mm 'Chicom' shells. JNIM claimed responsibility and said that the shelling caused material and human losses.
