On 26 August 2023, presumed JNIM militants shelled the town of Timbuktu. Three shells fell near the Little Market in the Badjinde quarter and two others in Bangoume Farrou sector of the town. At least four civilians including a girl were wounded. The girl succumbed to her wounds.
