On 13 August 2023, in Pe Thaung village (Kyaukkyi township, Taungoo district, Bago-East region), artillery shells fired by the Myanmar military between 3 pm to 10:30 pm hit house that was being used as a venue for a self-reliance school in the evening. Students were attending classes when the incident occurred. Two students, both around 10 years old, were killed. A mother of one of the students and another student sustained injuries.
