On 3 August 2023, Russian air forces struck the Ukrainian military near Makarivka, Donetsk. According to Russian sources, more than 120 Ukrainian soldiers were killed, 2 armored vehicles, 3 cars, 2 artillery systems were destroyed near Staromaiorske, Rivnopil, Makariv and Piyutne (120 fatalities split across 4 locations and coded as 40).
