On 5 July 2023, Russian forces launched an air strike and shelled Ukrainian positions near Rivnopil, Donetsk region. Russian forces also shot down a Ukrainian UAV near Rivnopil. According to Russian sources, on that day, up to 165 Ukrainian soldiers were killed near Makarivka, Rivnopil, Novodonetske, Urozhaine and Dorozhnianka (165 fatalities split across 5 locations and coded as 33).
