Feb 09, Colombo: A person who collects scrap metal and plastics has been critically injured in an explosion in Silawaththa, Mullaitivu, the police said. The explosion occurred when the individual had attempted to extract a Mortar shell he had collected. He had been admitted to Mancholai Hospital in Mullaitivu with serious injuries. During further investigations the Police discovered another three Mortar shells and 4 kgs of explosive material at the injured person’s residence. Subsequently Police had arrested a woman and another individual residing in the house, on charges of possession of explosive materials and Mortar shells. The suspects, aged 69 and 39 years, are due to be produced before the Mullaitivu Magistrate’s court today. Mullaitivu police are conducting further investigations.
