Report of bomb on Wirral beach prompts police dash
POLICE dashed to Fort Perch Rock after reports that a metal detectorist on the beach had found what they suspected to be an unexploded World War Two bomb.
A picture sent to the Globe shows police at the scene near Fort Perch Rock on Monday afternoon.
Police later confirmed that the object was not believed to be ordnance.
A spokesperson for the World War Two escape rooms attraction, Escape The Fort, which is situated in Fort Perch Rock, told the Globe: "It turned out to be a false alarm today, but it brings home how we're still affected by the echos of the last war 80 years later."
"We set out to make Escape The Fort the most immersive World War Two escape experience in the world - but potentially an unexploded WW2 bomb just 10 yards from the Fort, almost made it too immersive!
"Today's scare is another reminder of how much our local area was impacted by the war. From 1–7 May 1941 alone, 681 Luftwaffe bombers dropped 2,315 high explosive bombs and 119 incendiaries on Merseyside.
"Liverpool was the second most bombed city in the UK after London, which is why defence installations like Fort Perch Rock were attractive targets for the bombers.
"In fact, during the war, the courtyard of the Fort was painted in green stripes to look like a lawn and the word 'Teas' was painted on part of the roof to make the Fort look like a tea room from the air - and not a battery housing 100 soldiers. For a moment today, I thought the Germans might not have been fooled by the trick.
"The ironic thing is, the Fort actually has now got a tea room in it - apty named The Mess."
