A man accused of possessing remote detonators, explosives and documents referencing jihad has appeared in court charged with terrorism offences.

Asad Bhatti, 47, was arrested after counter-terrorism police raided a property in Redhill, Surrey, on January 8.

He is accused of being in possession of chemicals found in a storage unit that were capable of producing the explosive substance nitroglycerin.

Three remote detonators, including an improvised detonator that contained traces of an explosive substance, were also allegedly found at his home address and the unit.

Bhatti appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court charged with three counts of making or possessing an explosive under suspicious circumstances, and two counts of possessing an article for the purpose of terrorism.

He is further accused of being in possession of documents that made reference to jihad and combat.

Bhatti, of Holland Close, Redhill, appeared in court wearing a dark grey jumper and a blue disposable face mask.

He spoke only to confirm his name, age and address.

No pleas were entered to the charges.

He was remanded in custody to appear at the Old Bailey on February 5.
