Police and bomb squad in Hereford as cordon in place near racecourse Anti-tank weapon found The Ministry of Defence said it was a 29mm Spigot Mortar that was found in Aylesbrook this afternoon. Spigot Mortars are anti-tank weapons from the Second World War A Ministry of Defence spokesperson said an Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team from Ashchurch Troop, 721 EOD Squadron, 11 EOD and Search Regiment, attended Aylesbrook Road, Hereford at the request of West Mercia Police. The team found and identified a 29mm Spigot Mortar, which was then destroyed. 5:18pm Where is Aylesbrook? There were a number of homes evacuated in Hereford this afternoon after some form of unexploded device was found. It is not clear what the device is or how it was found, with no updates from the authorities yet. But it was found in the Aylesbrook area, which is a small housing estate near Hereford Racecourse. It is just off the A4103 Roman Road. And it was at the racecourse that a controlled explosion took place. An eyewitness who was evacuated from her house shared pictures and videos from the scene. 4:46pm No updates yet from police We are trying to contact West Mercia Police for an update. Usually when a cordon is in place and the bomb squad is in attendance, the police put out updates to reassure locals and let people know what's going on. There has been nothing yet from the police, but we are trying. 4:45pm Homes evacuated as bomb squad called An eyewitness has told the Hereford Times that she was evacuated from her house as the cordon was put in place. Aneta Sedziak said she was evacuated at about 2.30pm on Sunday afternoon for more than an hour. She was only able to grab a coat as she was told to leave, along with other people living nearby. 4:36pm Police cordon in place A police cordon has been in place in Aylesbrook, off Roman Road, in Hereford. A number of homes have also been evacuated, an eye witness told the Hereford Times.
