Westcliff beach cordoned off after 'unexploded bomb' found The military were sent to help assist with the discovery A large part of Westcliff-on-Sea beach had to be cordoned off by officials due to a suspected unexploded bomb being found. Coastguard officials have locked off a 500m area of beach following reports of suspected ordnance, or explosives, having been found in the water. The team were unable to locate the item on Friday due to the tide so returned on Saturday (February 26) morning. Officials from HM Coastguard were joined by an Army Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) team who investigated the reported items. They attempted to determine their origin before making them safe to be transported away for disposal. A 100m cordon was put in place during the whole incident to keep locals safe from danger. A spokesperson for the Southend branch of HM Coastguard said: "We would like to express our thanks to the public for their understanding and to the Park Run again for their cooperation and assistance. "Many different types of unexploded military ordnance can and does wash up on the shore/offshore Ð it comes in different shapes and sizes and isnÕt always easy to spot. Because of such ordnance, if found, it can be potentially dangerous, if you ever see something suspicious or out of the ordinary on the beach or in the sea, do not touch it, move it or take it home, Let the experts decide if it is safe. Move to a safe space and call 999 and ask for the Coastguard so our teams can investigate. " The Ministry of Defence was approached for a comment.
