Surrey Police and bomb disposal experts were called to the area near Whiteley Village The discovery of an unexploded Second World War bomb led to an increased police presence and a 50-metre cordon near Whiteley Village, Hersham. Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) experts were called to the area to deal with the incident and the cordon was lifted a couple of hours later. The explosive was found in an area of woodland off Coombe Lane and led to police closing off its surroundings. Photos from the scene showed Surrey Police vehicles parked on a grass verge and it was reported that the road had been closed to everybody, except those that live there. Surrey Police initially announced: ÒYou may be aware of an increased police presence in the area of Hersham around Whiteley Village. This is due to the discovery of what is believed to be an unexploded Second World War bomb this morning in woodland between Coombe Lane and Burhill Park Road.Ó READ MORE: Surrey barber who tried to smuggle firearms in a microwave into UK said he ordered hair clippers They continued: ÒA 50m cordon has been put in place at this time for public safety, but we anticipate the area will be open to the public again later today once the device has been safely dealt with by Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) experts. We do not anticipate any evacuations from properties in the area at this time.Ó The spokesperson later issued an update to confirm the ordnance was a bomb from the Second World War and to advise the cordon was in process of being lifted. They added: ÒWe can now confirm that the ordnance found in woodland near Coombe Lane in Hersham this morning has been confirmed as a Second World War bomb, and has been dealt with by Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) experts. ÒCordons are now being lifted and you should be able to travel through the area as normal. Thank you for your patience.Ó
