On 30 January 2023, presumed ISWAP/ Boko Haram militants planted IEDs which exploded after a convoy of Nigerian troops on a fighting patrol stepped on them along Gana-Waijroko road (Damboa, Borno). At least four soldiers were wounded. ISWAP claimed the attack and added that around nine soldiers were killed or wounded.
