During construction work in Freiburg, a 500-kilo World War II bomb turns up - near the university hospital of all places. Patients and residents must now be brought to safety. After the discovery of an aircraft bomb from the Second World War near the University Hospital in Freiburg, the transfer of patients from the affected part of the building is to begin on Friday morning. Since the American 500-kilo bomb was discovered around 30 meters by tumor biology, this wing of the building will be completely cleared according to SWR information. The patients are transferred to other wards of the university hospital. Parts of the ear, nose and throat clinic, neurosurgery and the women's clinic are also being evacuated. According to SWR information, the whole action should be completed around 9 a.m. on Saturday morning. Residents within a 500-meter radius of the bomb have to leave their homes. Specialists from the explosive ordnance disposal service have secured the site where the bomb was found. Mounds of earth have been placed all around to minimize the effects of the detonation should something go wrong during the defusing process. According to the city, many actors have to coordinate in the run-up to the evacuation, including the university hospital, Freiburger Verkehrs AG (VAG), Deutsche Bahn and civil protection. Residents would be informed in detail, said a spokesman for the city. A crisis team was set up. These include the police, the explosive ordnance disposal service and the civil protection office. In addition, an information telephone is to be set up. The city of Freiburg emphasized that there was no acute danger for residents. The bomb was found during construction work on Lehener Strasse. The Employment Agency is also nearby.
