On 18 January 2023, AQAP militants targeted with two IEDs vehicles of the 6th STC Support and Reinforcement Brigade in the region of Wadi Umaran (Mudiyah, Abyan) killing at least 3 including the commander of the 2nd Battalion. One source claimed 3 fatalities and 3 injuries and another 4 fatalities and 2 injuries. AQAP claimed that the first IED killed the commander and 8 of his escorts and the second killed an unidentified number of soldiers.
