Dare County officials have confirmed that the Navy came to the Colington area on the afternoon of Dec. 11 to remove a piece of unexploded ordinance that apparently washed up from the sound. In response to a Voice question, Steven R. Kovacs, Dare County Deputy Director of Emergency Management/Fire Marshal, emailed the following information. “In the area of Harbourview Drive and Juniper Ct., a resident discovered a piece of unexploded ordinance and called 911 @ 1236. Colington VFD [Volunteer Fire Department] was dispatched to the scene. I also responded along with Dare County Sheriff Deputies. Upon arrival, [the respondents] confirmed a small piece of ordinance. The area was secured and Navy EOD [Explosive Ordinance Disposal] was contacted. Navy EOD arrived at about 1735 and took possession of the material and transported it back to their facility for disposal.” In a brief interview with Voice, Dare County Emergency Management Director Drew Pearson said it is difficult to estimate the age of the ordinance, but he did suggest it was very old, possibly even World War I or pre-World War 1 vintage. As to how often similar incidents occur with old ordinance turning up, Pearson said “it happens more frequently than you would think.”
