The Malian Islamist organisation JNIM (Groupe de soutien de l'islam et des musulmans), which is linked to Al Qaeda, claimed responsibility for the attack in which two French soldiers were killed on Wednesday. The two French soldiers from Operation Barkhane were killed in an explosive device attack on their armoured vehicle near the Malian border with Niger and Burkina Faso. The explosion occurred in the Mnaka region in the east of the country. The JNIM, responsible for other attacks in Mali and linked to the kidnapping of at least six Westerners in recent years, claimed responsibility for Wednesday's attack on two Mauritanian websites via which it had already communicated.
