A BOMB squad was called to a Barrow building site after fears of unexploded military ordnance. Police closed off a section of Hindpool Road after the suspect item was discovered in a BAE car park. Work was being carried out at the land off Hindpool Road when police were made aware of the item. Tape could be seen around mounds of earth where diggers had been operating. A spokesman for BAE said it had notified police as a 'precaution'. Police said there was no risk to the public. Officers were called to the scene at around 10am and erected a cordon on Hindpool Road from the bottom of Cornwallis Street to outside the Morrisons supermarket. The slipway from Michaelson Road to Hindpool Road was also blocked off by police. The road was closed for several hours as officers awaited the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team. The specialist team carried out an assessment on the scene. Following that the cordon was lifted. Police had previously said a controlled explosion was due to be carried out. Describing the incident, a Cumbria Police spokesman said: "There are currently road closures in place around the Hindpool Road, Barrow area, due to a piece of potential ordnance being located. "The road closure will be in effect on Hindpool Road, from the traffic lights at Cornwallis Street to Morrisons. This includes the slip road from Michaelson Road. "The EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal), will be carrying out an assessment on the object. "The road closures will remain in place whilst this action is undertaken. "The activity may take a number of hours. "There is no risk to the public."
