Police and the bomb squad were called to the scene on Houlton Way. A cordon was erected on a busy street after an unexploded bomb was found at a building site earlier today (September 13). Homes were also evacuated on Houlton Way, near the junction with Great Brook Ground, as the bomb squad carried out a controlled explosion. Experts from the Ministry of Defence were called to the scene in Rugby. Residents in a 400m safety zone of the discovery were told to leave their homes. Nearby residents were told to remain calm and not to be alarmed at the explosion which was carried out at around 4pm. Houlton School reassured parents that the school was outside the safety zone and all pupils were safe. In a statement, Warwickshire Police said: “A cordon is in place and houses have been evacuated in Houlton Way, Rugby near the junction with Great Brook Ground, following the discovery of an unexploded artillery shell. Explosives experts are preparing for a controlled explosion so please do not be alarmed if you hear it.”
