On 20 July 2022, artillery strikes carried out by an unidentified group hit a tourist resort in Perex village in Zakho district, Duhok, killing 9 civilians (Iraqi tourists) who were doing picnic in the area and injuring at least 29 others. Local sources and HPG (PKK) claimed Turkish armed forces are responsible for the attack, whilst Turkish government denied any involvement, blaming the PKK it combats in the region. PKK also denied responsibility for the attack, claiming they have no forces in the area.
