Bomb disposal experts carried out a controlled explosion after a Second World War mortar was found in Wensleydale. The device was spotted on Monday by local man Chris Houseman not far from the road between West Witton and Melmerby near Penhill. Police cordoned off the road while the mortar was destroyed. It is believed the device may have been dug up by rabbits as it was found near the entrance to a burrow.
