Projectile event in Wallonia, Braine-le-Château area, Belgium on Fri 13th May 2022
13th May 2022
A shell from the Second World War was discovered shortly after 4.30 pm in the Hain, near the bridge on the Tubize road. The fire brigade of the Walloon Brabant rescue zone was called to the scene, as well as the army's Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service (SEDEE). Under the orders of Lieutenant Hubert Molle, the fire brigade secured the site and blocked the Tubize roadway at the height of the rush hour to prevent any passage over the Hain bridge. The Braine-le-Château and Tubize works departments also intervened to set up diversions. Once the SEDEE was on site, the specialists quickly identified the device. "Armour piercing high explosive: it is a German artillery ammunition from the Second World War, 10.5cm in diameter with a steel head and an explosive charge at the back to pierce on impact, explained one of the deminers on the spot. It didn't explode: maybe someone dumped it in the river because the bridge seems to me to have been built well after the war...".
