The mortar fire hit the outskirts of the regional capital of Borno State in north-eastern Nigeria shortly before the arrival of President Muhammadu Buhari, who was on an official visit to the area on Thursday 23 December 2021. This latest attack in the major city of Maiduguri has left at least four people dead and others injured. Five mortar rounds hit the outskirts of Maiduguri, two kilometres from the civilian airport and less than a kilometre from the Nigerian Air Force base. One house was severely damaged. A woman and her three children were killed. Other injured were treated by the emergency services. The Islamic State in West Africa (ISWAP) group is suspected to be behind this new deadly attack, which occurred just over an hour before President Muhammadu Buhari was due to arrive in the country.
