The Second World War explosive was found in Surrey and should not have been moved, police said A man in Surrey caused a panic for police after he revealed he had a potentially live mortar in his car and was planning on taking it to a police station. On Sunday (December 13), the Roads Policing Unit of Surrey Police shared a photo of the dangerous object after an officer was flagged down. According to the Tweet, the man was heading towards a police station with what he believed to be an historic mortar The military weapon, which fires explosive shells at short range, could well have been live as thousands of such devices are still dotted around the county from the Second World War, many of them unexploded. The man then took the weapon out of his car boot, and placed it onto the verge of the road. A bomb disposal team was then immediately called by the police to make the situation safe. On Twitter, the police officer reminded people not to move an explosive if they stumble across one. They said: "If you ever find ordnance or a suspicious package, DO NOT poke, open, move or transport it. Retreat a minimum of 50 metres and call police on 999 and leave it in situ."
