IED event in Perth, Newcastle Street Leederville area, Australia on Thu 20th January 2022

A homemade bomb was detonated near two busy restaurants in Leederville Thursday, with a second bomb scare shutting down parts of the city hours later. Emergency services were called to an area between two restaurants along Newcastle Street about 1.30pm Thursday, after a homemade bomb exploded. Shrapnel and debris flew about 10m, however police have confirmed no one was injured. Police say the bomb was a homemade, makeshift device. The remnants were seized by officers and are under forensic examination. Just hours after the explosion the bomb squad and tactical response group were called to the CBD after a person reported they had a similar improvised explosive device. The person told police they allegedly had taken the device from a vehicle belonging to someone they knew. Officers honed in on a location near the intersection of Wellington Street and King Street about 10.20pm, cordoning off the area and shutting down nearby streets. Police discovered the item, another homemade device similar to the one detonated in Leederville, and rendered it safe. In the early hours of Friday morning, Perth detectives raided a residence in Lansing Street in Queens Park and executed a search warrant with the support of TRG. A 29-year-old man was taken into custody without incident and is assisting detectives with the investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
